WAYLAND — WACO Superintendent of Schools Darrell Smith wants the WACO School Board to sit down with community representatives from the communities served by the district — Crawfordsville, Olds and Wayland — to brainstorm about goals and planning for not only the school district, but also the communities.

Although no date has been set, Smith said he would like this done before Thanksgiving and is looking at the week of Nov. 10 with the time, date and location yet to be determined.

“We need them (the communities) to grow,” Smith told school directors at Monday night’s school board meeting. “However, they also need us because they need a school district so people will want to move into their community.

“I think all three of the communities want to be more aggressive,” he continued. “We need them to grow to help us grow.”

Smith also said he will invite area state legislators to the meeting.

In another matter, Smith said the district needs to have a sale or auction of disposal equipment, probably toward the end of the current school year.

“Surplus equipment is a problem for many school districts,” he said, noting that the state has specific guidelines on disposal procedures. “We can’t sell it for scrap, we have to give the public a chance to purchase it,” he explained.

Some of the surplus equipment includes vehicles, buses, cabinets, old desks, etc.

If the district were to have an auction, it must be advertised from 10-20 days prior to the date.
