WACO softball runs to big win over W-MU

WAYLAND — They hit, they bunted and they walked — the WACO softball team got on first any way it could. Then the Warriors stole their way around the bases and didn’t let up until they had a 12-0, four-inning win over conference rival Winfield-Mt. Union on Monday.

“I like to steal bases,” WACO Coach Shannon Rugg said. “We teach the girls to be aggressive.”

The Warriors had 12 steals in last night’s contest — two each from six different players.

The aggressive style played a big role in ending Monday’s game early, and a quick win can be very important for a small team.

WACO only has 12 softball players, and that means that most of they are playing on both the JV and varsity teams — and they’re playing doubleheaders almost every night.

“We play a lot of games, and when you play two games every day, it gets monotonous,” Rugg said. “That’s part of the reason that we do things to make it fun.”

Rugg puts a big emphasis on having fun.

“When you make it fun, they tend to play harder,” he said.

So the girls get some days off of practice, and Rugg — the third base coach — keeps Skittles on hand for any runner that reaches third.

He also gave the girls wristbands with color-coded numbers that he uses to give signals to his hitters and runners.

“They use it some in college softball, and the kids like it — it makes it fun for them. Plus, it’s a lot easier (than memorizing signs).”

He hopes that word spreads, bringing more girls to the diamond next season.

“Next year, we’d like to have a (separate) JV and varsity team,” he said.

For now, however, the 12 players that he has are doing just fine.

“We have a good group, and they all get along,” Rugg said.

The Warriors are 2-3 so far this season, while W-MU is now 3-4.

WACO will play another home game tonight (Tuesday) against Lone Tree, starting with varsity at 5:30 p.m.

The Wolves host IMS tonight, starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.
