WACO unable to fend off Hawk’s comeback

WAYLAND — The WACO boys’ basketball team gave Central Lee quite the scare on Tuesday night in SEISC South Division action. The Warriors held a lead through three periods, but a furious comeback from the Hawks spoiled WACO’s final home game, 54-42.

The Warriors started out strong, scoring the first five points of the game and led 11-8 after one period of play. WACO led by as much as seven points, at 17-10, early in the second half but the Hawks came back and spiked a 22-21 halftime lead.

The Warriors were scoring well inside in the first two periods. Conner Eichelberger and Beau Beckler each had three shots fall from inside. Drew Kissell had the team’s only three-pointer in the first half.

WACO got off to a hot start in the third quarter. The Warriors went on a 7-1 run to begin the period and led 28-23 just two minutes into the quarter. After three, it was WACO leading 36-33.

Central Lee was able to live at the free throw line in the second half, however, and those free throws made the difference down the stretch. The Hawks retook the lead 39-36 with five minutes remaining and pulled away late.

WACO was outscored 21-8 in the final quarter as Central Lee walked out 12-point winners and finished in a three-way tie for second place in the SEISC South Division.

Eichelberger scored nine points in the second half, including the team’s only make from three-point land, and led the team with 15 points in the game. Beckler had 10 to give WACO two double-digit scorers.

Kissell finished the night with seven points. Nik Coble scored four, and the trio of Jacob Fried, Colton Horak and Matthew Leichty scored two points each.

WACO finished seventh in the SEISC South Division and will host Mediapolis on Friday, February 9, during the SEISC boys’ shootout.
