WACO, W-MU send athletes to state meet

May 10, 2013

RIVERSIDE — The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ track and field team automatically qualified for state in three events, while the WACO boys qualified in four events and the Warrior girls had one relay earn a state berth at last night’s qualifier at Highland.

In the Class 1A qualifying meets, the top finisher from each event earns an automatic bid to Des Moines.

For the Warriors, Dylan Carlson’s time of 15.62 in the 110-meter high hurdles was good enough for a win and a state bid.

Both of WACO’s 4x100-meter teams also qualified. The boys’ team of Kevin Anderson, Brett Hesseltine, Bryce Achen and Carlson crossed the lien in 45.26 seconds, while the girls’ team of Angel Frier, Rosemary Skriver, Jennie Greene and Katelyn White finished in 53.62 seconds for a pair of gold medals.

Anderson will also compete in the high jump at state; he won the event at the qualifier with a jump of 6-1.

Anderson was also part of WACO’s winning shuttle hurdle team, which finished in 1:01.59. He and his teammates — Hesseltine, Achen and Carlson — will compete in the event in Des Moines.

For the W-MU girls, Lou Krieger-Coen threw a 107-9 in the discus for a trip to Drake Stadium, while Karlie Wade jumped 15-4 in the long jump to win that event and qualify for the state meet.

The Wolves’ shuttle hurdle team of Anna Crawford, Karlie Wade, Emily Mathews and Cassie Kingery also qualified, finishing in 1:08.24.

Others are still waiting to hear if they qualified; after the automatic qualifiers, the next 12 best times or distances will also make state.
