Walter E. Hill, 74, of rural Birmingham, died on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at the University Hospitals, in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, at the First Lutheran Church, in Fairfield, with Rev. Greg Friedrich officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, at Birmingham. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Raymond Funeral Home, in Fairfield. A Masonic Rites service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Children Hospital or to the First Lutheran Church, in Fairfield. Raymond Funeral Home, in Fairfield, is handling the arrangements.

Hill was born on Nov. 5, 1942, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Max D. and Mildred Ruth Graf Hill. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1961. He married Deb Monson in 1963. They later divorced. He then married Bonnie Jean Runklle on March 21, 1980.

He was a policeman in Mt. Pleasant before joining the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department as deputy sheriff, serving for over 30 years.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, in Fairfield.

He enjoyed following the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.

Hill is survived by three children, Karen Hill, of Hills; Norma (Tony) Baker, of Fairfield; and Billie Ray (Lynn) Hill, of Oskaloosa; his step-children, Dale (Amanda) Ingwersen, of Douds; Jeffrey (Tammy) Ingwersen, of Washington; Jodi Howard, of Albia; Thomas Ross, of North Liberty; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Hill, of Fairfield; Keith (Diana) Hill, of Brighton; and his sister, Donna (Kenny) Greiner, of Brighton.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a grandson.
