WAYLAND — Members of the Wayland City Council considered a new ordinance which would require pet owners to keep their animal’s occupancy clean or face a fine.

On Wednesday, April 4, the Wayland City Council decided against adopting an ordinance that would require pet owners to keep all structures, coops or yards where animals were contained clean. City attorney Mike Vance advised against the ordinance saying enforcing the issue may be difficult.

“I’m not sure that you’ve got a problem that needs fixed,” he said.

Council members explained they had driven by homes where conditions were not aesthetically pleasing and were seeking a way to help. The council decided against adopting the ordinance, instead choosing to utilize the nuisance ordinance in place.

The council members also discussed restricting parking of motorized vehicles to gravel or solid surfaces only. The council wants to crack down on the number of people parking in front lawns. They decided to require all motorized vehicles that were parked in front of the rear wall of the housing structure to be parked on a hard surface. The council will vote on the draft at the next meeting.

Police Chief Ron Roth reported that since the beginning of the year there had been no local parking tickets, 12 traffic tickets, eight citizen reports and one traffic accident.

New business:

• Approved tax abatement application for new home at 308 E. Front St.

• Approved trade of Simplicity Mower

• Approved training for IAMU Plastic Pipe Joining for two citizens

• Approved national warranty line for Spring marketing campaign

• Approved re-roofing of home at 209 E. Main St.
