Preseason football polls are all about speculation. With sportswriters and announcers from around the state voting on teams that nobody has seen play, rankings tend to be more on the previous season’s results than the season to come.

For that reason, early games are extremely important for teams that already have the pollster’s eyes. One of those teams, New London, made a major statement last Friday, and they’ve seen the benefits in the Week One polls.

New London, which appeared in most of the preseason polls, played their first eight-man game against a highly touted Hartwick-Ladora-Victor (HLV) team, that was ranked as high as No. 3 (Radio Iowa) coming into the game.

The Tigers rolled through H-L-V, knocking the Warriors off 51-16 in one of the more decisive marquee games on the Iowa eight-man schedule.

This week the voters all agreed that New London deserved to be in the top 10, but they didn’t agree on where to rank them. The Tigers are No. 4 in the Gazette poll, No. 5 in the Associated Press poll and No. 7 in the Radio Iowa poll.

H-L-V meanwhile, was knocked completely out of the top 10 rankings in all the polls, including the same Radio Iowa poll that had them in the top three after Week 0.

New London isn’t the only District 4 team getting attention in the polls, however. Iowa Valley, the team that escaped with a two-score win over WACO at home last week, is ranked No. 6 in the Gazette poll and the Radio Iowa Poll, and had the most votes among unranked teams in the AP.

Lone Tree, another District 4 team, was knocked out of the Gazette poll after dropping their first district game to Montezuma. Both of those teams have made some noise in early rankings and predictions, as has WACO, making the district one of the toughest in the state.

New London plays at Moravia this week in non-district play, but then returns to league play with a couple of tough matchups in September. They’ll host WACO on Sept. 7 and travel to Lone Tree on Sept. 14.

In Class 3A, Solon is the only team ranked in Mt. Pleasant’s district (3A D5). The Spartans are ranked No. 3 in the AP poll, No. 4 in the Gazette poll and No. 5 in the Radio Iowa poll.

Pella, Mt. Pleasant’s next opponent, is very highly ranked in Class 3A. The Dutch find themselves at No. 3 in the Gazette poll, No. 4 in the Radio Iowa poll and No. 5 in the AP poll.
