Will you carry your cross?

By Parnell Davis, YFC Coordinator | Sep 07, 2018

In Matthew 16:24 Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”

The idea of denying oneself can be somewhat foreign in the days we live in, where more and more, life seems to be more self-centered. Jesus calls us as believers to live differently, to deny ourselves, our wants and our desires and follow Him.

There are many that claim the title of Christianity, but how many are literally willing to give up everything to follow Jesus? There isn’t anything naturally glamorous about being Christ-like, it’s difficult, not catering to our desires usually is. But those who truly wish to follow Jesus, to be Christ-like, must know that there is sacrifice involved.

Many wished to follow Jesus, until they had to count the cost.

Luke 9:61 “Another also said, ‘I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say goodbye to those at home.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘No one after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

There is an old song we used to sing growing up in church, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.”

In other words, when you decide to follow Jesus, follow Him with everything. It’s hard to move forward and get to a desired location if you are looking backward, and yet that can be a tendency of most. We oftentimes look back at past habits, behaviors, failures, and even successes. I will reiterate. Following Jesus is not easy, but it is worth it. He is worth it! Is He worth it to you? And if so, will you carry your cross and follow Him?
