KALONA — The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams traveled to Kalona on Tuesday night where they earned a split with Iowa Mennonite. The girls dominated 54-27, but the boys fell 94-55.

It was all W-MU in the first half of the girls’ game. The Lady Wolves torched IMS 24-4 in the first quarter and 21-7 in the second to take a commanding 45-11 lead into halftime. IMS won the second half 16-9, but the damage had already been done.

Lexee Hartsock dominated all night, scoring 18 points to lead the team. Jenna Buffington had eight points and Karley Schlee finished with seven.

Allie McArtor scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds in the win. Lauren Jamison and Jami Wilkerson had five points apiece. Molly Jennings scored three, and Liana Sweezer had two.

The boys’ team kept it close with the unbeaten IMS squad in the first quarter. The Wolves were outscored by just one point in the opening period, 13-12.

IMS went off in the second quarter, however. The Wolves gave up 34 points, scoring only 14 themselves and finding themselves in a big halftime hole, 47-26.

W-MU began to chip back with an 18-15 third quarter advantage, but IMS turned it on again in the fourth quarter, and eventually built their lead up to a 39-point victory.

Dante Oepping was red hot from outside, scoring 18 points on 5-7 shooting and 4-5 from three-point land. Jared Arnold scored 11 points off the bench to give the Wolves two double-digit scorers. Arnold also co-led the team with four rebounds.

B.J. Rodgers had eight points and four assists in the loss. Cody McCreight scored eight points. Christian Gerot and Bryant Holtkamp each had four points, and Dawson Bergthold finished with two. Mitchell Niebuhr didn’t score in the loss, but did co-lead the Wolves with four rebounds.
