Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams sweep Columbus

WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams were able to get their brooms out for the first time this season on Tuesday night.

The Lady Wolves started things out with a 36-21 win over Columbus for their fourth victory of the season. The boys followed with their first win, toppling the Wildcats 42-33.

The girls’ team had to come back from an 8-4 deficit after the first period. They took the lead in the second quarter and held a slim 13-10 advantage at halftime.

The Wolves held the Wildcats to just two points in the second quarter, and followed that up with a 9-4 fourth quarter to stretch their lead to 22-14.

W-MU opened up their lead even more in the final period. The Wolves won the fourth quarter 14-7 and walked out with their fourth home win in four tries.

Pearl Krieger-Coble led the way for the Wolves, scoring 13 points, pulling down nine rebounds and ending the day with four steals.

Jenna Buffington and Lexee Hartsock scored eight points apiece in the win. Buffington added three assists, which co-led the team.

Jami Wilkerson had three points and four steals. Karley Schlee scored two points and dished out three assists, and Lauren Jamison added two points of her own.

The W-MU boys held an 8-6 lead after the first quarter and stretched the advantage to 22-16 after two.

Columbus was able to tighten up the game after the third period, but W-MU still led 29-26. The Wolves held on in the fourth, however, and got away with a nine-point victory.

Cody McCreight led the scoring effort with 18 points. Christian Gerot added 10 points, and B.J. Rodgers scored eight points.

Bryant Holtkamp had five points and 10 rebounds, and Mitchell Niebuhr finished the night with one point and six assists.

The Lady Wolves moved to 4-1 with the win, and the boys went to 1-2. The boys’ team will host West Branch on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m.. Both teams will play West Burlington on the road on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m.
