FT. MADISON — The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ basketball team was knocked out of postseason play on Monday night in their first round district game at Holy Trinity Catholic. The Crusaders won each of the first three quarters and knocked the Wolves out of the tournament, 60-50.

W-MU was outscored 13-11 in the first quarter and 14-8 in the second quarter, putting them at a 27-19 disadvantage at the halftime break.

HTC spread the lead by three points at the end of the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Wolves 17-14 to grow the lead to 12 points at 44-33.

W-MU did outscore HTC 17-16 in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late as the Crusaders moved on to the district quarterfinals later this week.

The Wolves had three double-digit scorers in the game. Cody McCreight had 15 points and both B.J. Rodgers and Daunte Oepping ended the night with 13. Mitchell Niebuhr scored six points in the loss and Bryant Holtkamp finished with three.

The Wolves finished the year 3-19 with two wins over Columbus Community and one over Pekin.

Holy Trinity moved on to play Iowa Mennonite on Thursday, February 15. Danville and Highland will also play at IMS on Thursday in the preceding game. New London will be the site of the other two district games when WACO takes on Notre Dame and the hosting Tigers play Lone Tree.
