COLUMBUS — The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams had a big night in Columbus on Tuesday. The Wolves won a close girls’ game, 48-44, and ran away in the boys’ game, 50-33.

The Lady Wolves had the advantage in each of the first three quarters. W-MU led 12-9 after one quarter, 27-21 at halftime and 38-26 after three. Columbus clawed back in the final eight minutes, but it wasn’t enough as W-MU held on for the victory.

Lexee Hartsock had 19 points to lead the Wolves to victory. Allie McArtor had 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds, and Karley Schlee finished the night with eight points and five assists.

Liana Sweezer scored six points in the loss. Kydnal Townsley had three, and Lauren Jamison had two. Jami Wilkerson didn’t score in the game, but did lead the team with four steals.

The W-MU boys held an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 22-16 lead at halftime. The Wolves were able to run away with the game in the second half, outscoring Columbus 17-12 in the third quarter and 11-5 in the fourth en route to the 17-point victory.

Cody McCreight had another nice game, scoring 14 points to lead the team. B.J. Rodgers had 10 points. Christian Gerot scored six. Bryant Holtkamp and Daunte Oepping finished with five apiece. Mitchell Niebuhr had four, and the duo of Graham Hagge and Jared Arnold scored three each.

Both W-MU teams will have a full week to rest before they host a couple of tough squads from Iowa Mennonite on Tuesday, Jan. 23. That doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m.
