May 29, 2018

A street sign and utility pole were the casualties of a hit and run on Thursday, May 24.

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department were notified of a single vehicle accident near the intersection of Broadway and State streets, which knocked down a street sign and hit a utility pole. The accident happened at approximately 9:35 a.m., on Thursday, May 24.

According to police reports, a 1995 Nissan Maxima, operated by James Webster and owned by Jeremiah Coby, of Wisconsin, was traveling in the southbound lane of Broadway, north of State St. intersection, when Webster lost control of the vehicle. Webster jumped the curb and continued to travel south in the city right of way. The vehicle knocked over a street sign pole, and came to rest after striking a utility pole on the east side of Broad St. at the same intersection.

The vehicle left the scene before officer’s arrival, but was located a short while later parked in Wesleyan University’s north parking lot at the northeast corner of Broadway and Broad streets. There was no license plates on the Coby vehicles as it was not registered in Wisconsin.

There were no injuries reported. Total damages were estimated at $2,200. Webster was cited for failure to maintain control, operation of a non-registered vehicle and no insurance (accident related).
