DANVILLE — The Winfield-Mt. Union baseball team got on the board early and held off Danville late in the game to win last night’s district contest by a score of 4-3.

The Wolves’ bats came alive early and they posted two runs in the first frame. Lucas Rappenecker singled to start it off, and Darren Hunter hit followed with a double. Kolt Rossiter had a single that scored them both.

“It was big to get two runs on the board early,” Coach Kenton Klopfenstein said.

W-MU didn’t need any offense to add another run in the third inning — Jacob Arnold was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on two passed balls.

They tacked on what would be the winning run in the fourth inning, as Travis Jones walked, went to second on a passed ball and third on a groundout. He scored on a two-out, bunt single by Arnold.

Danville offense woke up in the fourth inning, putting up its first run of the game. The Bears added another run in the sixth and one in the seventh.

They had runners at first and second — the tying and winning runs — when the Wolves made a successful pick off play at second base to record the final out of the game.

“It was a big play — they had their No. 4 hitter up,” Klopfentstein said. “Lucas (Rappenecker), our second baseman, saw that he (the runner) was a ways off the base, and they just executed the play.”

Rappenecker and Hunter led the Wolves at the plate with two hits each. Hunter and Matthew Neibuhr each had a double.

Thayne McElhinney got the win on the mound, giving up four hits and two walks for two runs (one earned) in six innings. He struck out five.

Christian Fenton pitched in relief, allowing two walks and no hits for one unearned run while striking out one batter in the final frame.

The Wolves are now 7-16 on the season and advance to the semifinal game against Van Buren, which will be at Fairfield at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
