Carol Peterman was having a good Wednesday morning ... until she neared exit 40 (255th Street) on U.S. Highway 218.

That’s when her day literally went up in flames.

“I was having a good day, I am upright and anytime that happens, it is a good day,” Peterman said as she watched the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department extinguish the flames that totally engulfed her 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Peterman, of Donnellson, said she was coming to Mt. Pleasant to visit the chiropractor. As she exited the highway, a vehicle was following her and the driver signaled her to stop. The driver then proceeded to tell her that smoke was coming from the back of the vehicle.

“I have a pretty good ‘smeller’,” Peterman said, “but I hadn’t noticed or smelled anything. Then I saw some smoke coming from underneath the dashboard.”

She exited the vehicle just before it erupted in flames.

Maintaining a positive attitude despite the fire, Peterman noted she had filled her vehicle with gas yesterday and also lost a bag of cat food that was in the vehicle.

But other than that, she was fine. “There is no use crying about it,” she stated just as the last flames were succumbing to the dousing from the firefighters’ hoses.
