Your Friend on the Front Page

Jul 14, 2017
Carmen Benson

Every week, the Mt. Pleasant News will feature a Henry County resident in a profile snapshot. The questions will appear in bold.

This week’s ‘Friend on the Front Page’ is Carmen Benson, whom you may know from the Winfield-Mt. Union Community School District.

Are you originally from Mt. Pleasant/Henry County? If not, what brought you here? Yes, I grew up in Wayland and reside in Winfield.

What is your favorite part of living here? One of my favorite things about living in southeast Iowa is the weather and being able to enjoy the seasons from the hot summers to the snowy winters.

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy traveling through Iowa shopping for antiques, gardening and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.

Is there an annual event in Mt. Pleasant/Henry County that you enjoy? The Henry County Fair is an enjoyable week each year. I like watching the kids show off their talents and projects.

Is there something Mt. Pleasant/Henry County doesn’t have that you’d like to see? I think it would be fun to have a putt-putt golf course like Pirate’s Cove.

What is a local treasure in Mt. Pleasant/Henry County you wish more people knew about? Recently my daughter was married at the Airport Road Vineyard. This is a beautiful place with great food and drinks. I would highly recommend it for any event.

What do you think is Mt. Pleasant/Henry County’s trademark? Old Threshers, of course.

What’s one dish or drink that reminds you of Henry County? Jerry’s pizza; it’s one of the best around.

Tell us something interesting about you? I enjoy collecting unique things. Every year we vacation to Petoskey, Mi., and I hunt for Petoskey stones. They are only found in a few areas of the United States, so it’s always fun to see what we can find.
